Bridges

March 25, 2024

A bridge is a fixed solution to tooth loss. It is cemented to one or more surrounding teeth and uses them for support. Replacement of the missing tooth/teeth, improvement of speech, aesthetics and chewing ability are among the benefits of a bridge hence giving you a better ‘bite’.

Bridges are usually made of porcelain fused to metal, but at KDIC we offer latest and improved materials such as Emax ceramic which provides a remarkable and natural appealing result.

HOW ARE BRIDGES MADE?

Firstly, a thorough clinical examination is conducted with radiographs by the dentist. Assessment for the provision of bridge is done after which any preparatory work is carried out. At this stage we provide the patient with complete treatment plan, discuss the available materials for bridge, match the color for prosthesis and decide in the best interest of patient needs. We also advice on other concerns that you may have at this stage.

At the next appointment, the supporting teeth are prepared for bridge fabrication. The size of the abutment teeth is reduced/ trimmed (usually under local anaesthesia) to create the space required for bridge placement. Following trimming, the margins and tooth structure are evaluated thoroughly prior to impression making. The putty impression is then sent to a laboratory where skilled technicians and ceramists will fabricate the bridge according to the notes provided by the dentist. Meanwhile, temporary crown is made on the chair side and fitted onto the trimmed teeth.

At the final appointment, the temporary crowns are removed and the tooth surfaces cleaned. The trial for the fabricated bridge is carried out inside the mouth to check whether it fulfills its purpose functionally and esthetically. Lastly, the bridge is cemented onto the prepared teeth with dental cement.

HOW DO I LOOK AFTER MY BRIDGE?

Bridges are made of inert materials that do not depreciate over time and can last up to years. However, the underlying teeth are still prone to decay and gum disease. Maintaining good oral hygiene and regular checkups are required to sustain the quality and longevity of the bridge. Moreover, the ceramic on the surface may chip or fracture therefore avoid chewing excessively-hard substances like ice or bones.
